Indonesia is a great country filled with thousands of beautiful islands you can explore. You may know Indonesia because it is where Bali is located. However, there are more to explore beyond Bali island. And of course, you must try a wide selections of local foods while vacationing in Indonesia, such as:

Nasi Goreng

Nasi Goreng is basically fried rice and the idea of this cuisine is actually to avoid food waste as the rice made to make Nasi Goreng was originally a leftover from yesterday’s dinner or lunch. Now, you can find Nasi Goreng in almost every corner in Indonesia from street stalls to five-star-hotel restaurants. Nasi Goreng is made from rice mixed with shredded chicken, sausage, sliced meatballs, chopped vegetables. Its seasoning is pretty simple and doesn’t use any special herbs or spices. It tastes sweet, savory, and a little bit spicy.

Rendang

Rendang

Rendang is on top list of the most delicious food in the world. It’s meet dish usually made from beef or sometimes lamb. It has a mix of spicy and creamy taste as a result of a combination of coconut milk and chilli. The original Rendang is cooked for hours so you can taste the flavor to the inside of the meat perfectly. This dish is originally from Minangkabau tribe in West Sumatra. You can find this dish in Padangnese restaurants that scattered around the country. 

Bakso

Bakso is meatball soup in which the meatball is made from a mixture of ground beef, tapioca, salt, and pepper. However, there is also variety of it made from chicken, shrimp, and even pork. The meatballs are often filled with various contents too such as chilli, cheese, ground beef, eggs, or beef muscles. A bowl of Bakso contains meatballs, rice noodles, vegetables, bean sprouts, tofu, and meat dumpling in a boiling broth. To add more flavor, fried shallots and celery are sprinkled on top. People love to add some tomato sauce, chilli sauce, and soybean sauce.

Soto

Soto

Soto is is easy to find in Indonesia as each region of the country has its own version of it. A bowl of Soto consists of rice noodles, cabbage slices, bean sprouts, and sliced meats. Then, it’s poured with a clear broth mixed with spices such as turmeric, garlic, shallots, and lemongrass. Actually, the type of broth and meat can be different depending on the origin. For example, Soto Betawi has thick and creamy broth. Meanwhile, some other Soto use chicken, lamb, or pork instead of beef. 

Tongseng

This is basically stewed meat with curry soup. The meats used usually lamb, mutton, or beef. It tastes creamy, spicy, and savory as various spices are added for the flavor are garlic, shallots, coriander, ginger, galangal, and lemongrass. This cuisine is originated from Central Java but you can find it almost everywhere around the country.
